Manitowoc Water Works Company

The works were built in 1889 and are known as both standpipe and direct pressure. They include a first-class plant in the construction of which the best known engineering skill was used. The stand-pipe is 124 feet high and 20 feet in diameter and has a capacity of 300,000 gallons. At the base it is 72 feet above the water in the river making a pressure of 80 lbs. to the inch. Two Worthington pumps having a capacity of 3,000,000 per day supplies the direct pressure. The water is furnished by springs to which is supplemented a lake supply by means of 4,000 feet intake pipe in case of need. The mains cover 16 miles. The hydrants number in all 150. Colonel H Grahm superintendent of the works is one of our prominent and distinguished citizens. He is very active in Grand Army affairs. He served excepting 2 months through the entire war entering as a private and was brevetted as brigadier general. His regiments were the 1st and 22nd Iowa. He was wounded the 10th of August 1861 at Wilson's Creek and made prisoner at Vicksburg the 22nd of May 1863. Manitowoc Pilot 1896
